London Drivers to be satellite tracked wherever they go

Driving across London and back may soon cost you £15 - Britain - Times Online

DRIVERS face charges of up to 80 pence a mile under plans by Transport for London to halve congestion across the capital.

Cars would be equipped with satellite tracking devices and drivers would be charged at different rates depending on how close they came to the centre.

Under the plan, the rate from the outskirts of London to the north and south circular roads would be 16 pence a mile. From these roads to the boundary of the existing charging zone, the rate would be 48 pence a mile. Inside the zone, drivers would be charged 80 pence a mile.

A return journey from one side of London to the other would cost about £15.

What a bargain! I work, but don't live in London (thankfully), so I don't have to drive through it (just have to suffer the Tube). However, if anyone attaches a satellite tracking device to my car, I will rip it out and ram it right up their a***! Not only do we have to put up with ID cards, but I'll be damned if I am going to allow any official body (Government or otherwise) to be able to track my every move.

The scheme, which would come into force in 2015, would collect a total of £3 billion a year from drivers compared with the £180 million they currently pay.

With every other New Labour tax being piled on us, do you really think that London drivers will have £3 billion of disposable income to fund such a system?

Michelle Dix, TfL’s director of congestion charging, said that the scheme would cost between £500 million and £1 billion a year to run.

Let's assume for a second that this system works perfectly, in that every driver in London takes the bus. Where is their revenue going to come from? Livingstone had exactly this problem with the current congestion charge. He underestimated how effective it would be at keeping drivers out of the centre of London and as a result his projected income (which he had already promised to TfL to fund more public transport) fell short by £65 million!

I also assume that they are going to make the drivers pay for the satellite tracking equipment to fitted.
