Truancy Fines

Parents hit with truanting fines
Parents in England have been ordered to pay 1,134 on-the-spot £50 fines for children's truancy since the start of the school year.
I'm not too proud to admit that sometimes New Labour come up with the odd policy or two that I agree with. Truancy fines is one such policy. However, I don't think it goes far enough. Whack it up to a £50 fine per day of school missed.

For the sort of parents who take their kids out of school during term time to go on holiday without the permission of the school, a fine this large should put a big enough dent in their holiday savings to make them think twice.
