Politicalog - Fighting the Spin

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy. (Ernest Benn)

Iraq Democracy: American Style

It seems only Christians need apply.

I was listening to the Radio 4 Today podcast yesterday and picked up on a comment suggesting that the Christian Right Wing in the US is deeply disturbed with the idea of Islamic law being the guiding force behind the new Iraq constitution. So I decided to dig around the US press and blogs to see what I could find.

From Yahoo, we have 'U.S. concedes ground to Islamists on Iraqi law'
"We understand the Americans have sided with the Shi'ites," he said. "It's shocking. It doesn't fit American values. They have spent so much blood and money here, only to back the creation of an Islamist state ... I can't believe that's what the Americans really want or what the American people want."
(BTW: Can somebody please point out the distinction between "Americans" and "American People" for me?)

From La Shaun Barber's Corner, we have 'Iraq?s Draft Constitution':
Let me get this straight. American men and women died for ?freedom? in Iraq so the country could be ruled under Islamic law? What is ?free? about that?
Am I the only person who finds this kind of shit scary? We went to war with Iraq to finish Daddy's war, free the West from the threat of Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction, rid the world of a nasty, brutal dictator, free the Iraqi people. Having achieved this goal (takes tongue out of cheek) you would think that we could bow out and leave it up to the Iraqi people to decide the future of their own country. Apparently not.
