Politicalog - Fighting the Spin

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy. (Ernest Benn)

"And cancel Christmas!"

The New Zealand government recently appointed Wayne Mapp as Political Correctness Eradicator (what a great job title). I respectfully suggest that this country needs a whole bloody team of them:
A decision to call Christmas lights "Winter Lights" in south London has been condemned as showing a "total lack of respect" for Christians.

Advertisements for the switch-on of the lights in multi-cultural Lambeth have renamed them, apparently for fear of offending other faiths.
This whole "fear of offending other faiths" attitude is getting really tiresome. You wouldn't find Lambeth council renaming diwali because it might offend Christians. Rightly so, because it doesn't offend Christians. Why would it?

If Lambeth Council is trying to create a more tolerant, multi-cultural society, they are going exactly the wrong way about it. Why should Christians be made to bend their own culture around the supposed fear of offending other faiths at the same time as being told we have to be tolerant and welcoming of the rights and beliefs of those faiths were fear to offend?

As much as there are many radical religious noisemakers in this country, I'm sure the vast majority of non-Christian communities recognise that the UK is predominantly a Christian country and as such, they respect our right to practise our faith as much as we do theirs.
