Politicalog - Fighting the Spin

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy. (Ernest Benn)

Merry Christmas Milton Keynes. Love John Prescott.

Get that man a big red suit and a fake fluffy white beard. It has just been announced that MK is to get £300 million in extra funding. For a city on the move this is excellent news. Promises of shiny new residential amenities are abound.

How did Santa Prescott pull this one off? Did he try to lubricate Gordon's purse holding hand by slipping him a couple of extra whiskeys at the New Labour office Christmas party? Does he have some kind of dark influence over the chancellor that we should know about?

Well... no. He resorted to good old tried and tested socialist economics.

As you may know, MK is expanding at a rate of knots. New houses are popping up like daffodils in spring. And where there is money, there is a socialist with a tax plan.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you... Roof Tax.

Yes people... From now on, when a developer wants to apply for permission to build a new house in Milton Keynes, he has to fork over £18,500 to the city coffers. Genius.

The main driving force for MK expansion is Prescott himself. He wants 70,000 new houses by 2031 with the majority being built by 2015 along two main transport corridors in MK.

Affordable housing for key workers is the New Labour mantra. Developers, being the shrewd businessmen they are, will of course pass this cost along to the house buyer.

I bet these key workers are so glad they have a bag fat jolly socialist fighting in their corner.

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas!
