Compromise? What Compromise?

The great ID card compromise or the great ID card swindle?
You would be forgiven for thinking that, thanks to the Lords, you have an extra 2 years from 2008 to renew your passport without handing over every last strand of your DNA to New Labour.

You would be sadly mistaken. You see, Charles Clarke is semantically correct when he says ther during that period, you will not need a compulsory ID card. You will however, still have to register all of your biometric data on the ID card database to renew your passport.

Between 2008 and summer 2010 people applying for a passport will be able to opt-out of having an identity card, but not from having their details entered on the ID card database.

Oh, and you have to pay same amount as well…

And although Mr Clarke stressed prices had yet to be worked out there will be no discount for those who opt out.

UPDATE: I wrote this yesterday and forgot to post it till this morning. Either way Justin beat me to the punch with another excellent article… Go read.
