Best Year Ever!

Some good friends of mine have just had to take their young son into hospital. He was running a very high fever and started convulsing.

They took him to the local A&E department which is about half a mile from their front door. A&E decided he needed to be transferred to the paediatrics ward. The nearest paediatrics ward is over 14 miles away.

The same hospital has also closed its cardiac unit. If you find yourself having a heart attack in my home town you had better be prepared for a long ambulance ride. The nearest cardiac unit is about 30 to 40 minutes away.

Yet according to New Labour we have never had it so good.

Best year ever my arse!

Same everywhere. They reckon that soon anyone who has a heart attack here in Mid/West sussex will end up having to be sent to Brighton. If they had cut NHS spending and my taxes to boot I wouldn’t mind so much but this is happening with record levels of expenditure!

The appalling nature of these cutbacks is that there is clear research evidence that the time taken to reach definitive treatment for conditions such as acute myocardial infarctions directly affects outcomes – the call for help to needle (for thrombolysis) time.

While ambulances carrying a greater range of such medicaions helps, the reality is that one needs a properly staffed unit close by.
